The Rohtak district, established in 1824, emerged as an independent entity encompassing Gohana, Kharkhauda-Mandothi, Rohtak-Beri, and Maham-Bhiwani tehsils.
Until 1 March 1955, the judicial administration of Rohtak district was linked with Karnal district, with a single District and Sessions Judge overseeing both districts. This arrangement proved inconvenient for lawyers and litigants, prompting the Bar to advocate for a change. Consequently, a dedicated District and Sessions Judge was appointed for Rohtak.
On 1 March 1955, Rohtak was designated a distinct Sessions Division, and Shri Jwala Dass assumed the role of the First District and Sessions Judge, while Shri Ram Gopal Kohli became the Senior Sub Judge on 9 April 1959.
The Court of Additional District and Sessions Judges, led by Shri B.S. Yadav, was established in Rohtak on 28 August 1967.
In the current Sessions Division of Rohtak, there is a District and Sessions Judge’s Court, six Additional District and Sessions Judges’ Courts, a Civil Judge (Senior Division)’s Court, a Chief Judicial Magistrate’s Court, six Civil Judges (Junior Division)’s Courts, and an Additional Civil Judge (Senior Division)’s Court. Additionally, a Labour Court and a Consumer Court are operational. The Sessions Division also hosts a Special Judicial Magistrate’s Court, a Permanent Lok Adalat for Public Utility Services, and a Permanent and Continuous Lok Adalat (Samjhauta Sadan), all functioning in the Judicial Court Complex building near Mini Secretariat, Sonepat Stand, Rohtak.
The Bar Association of Rohtak, established in 1889, started with 40 members and has now grown to include approximately 2000 advocates enrolled as members. There is a separate bar association in Sub Division Meham.
